Chichibu / Installation

今回の展示では、秩父という土地に根付く山岳信仰を一つの視点として取り上げましたが、制作やリサーチを進める中で、その文化が単なる信仰の枠を超え、自然環境の保全においても重要な役割を果たしてきたことに強い興味を持ちました。

山を神聖な存在として捉える感覚は、自然に対して一定の距離と敬意を保つ態度を生み出します。

その距離感こそが、結果として自然を守ることにつながってきたのではないかと思います。現代的な環境保護の概念とは異なる形でありながら、この土地では長い時間をかけて自然との関係性が築かれてきたことを感じました。

秩父という地域には、そうした独特の自然観や文化的背景が今も静かに息づいています。今回のフィールドワークでは、地域の方々と直接話す機会も多く、山と人との関わり方について様々な視点を知ることができました。

外部から訪れる立場では見えにくい、この土地ならではの感覚や価値観に触れられたことは、今回の活動にとって非常に大きな収穫だったと思います。

特に印象に残っているのは、秩父在住の音楽家である笹久保伸さんの考えでした。

民族文化や地域の風習に関する深いリサーチをもとにした視点は非常に示唆に富んでおり、自然と人間の関係をどのように捉えていくべきかという点で多くのヒントを与えてくれました。

土地の文化や歴史を丁寧に読み解く姿勢は、今回のプロジェクトにとっても大きな参考となっています。

今回の展示は、秩父という土地に存在する自然観や信仰のイメージを、写真や服、そして空間構成を通して一つのかたちとして表現したものです。

しかし、それは決して答えを提示するものではなく、むしろこの土地とこれからどのように向き合っていくのかを考えるための小さな入口のようなものなのかもしれません。

森や山に対する人の感覚は、時代とともに少しずつ変化していきます。その中で、土地に根付く文化や信仰がどのように自然との関係を支えてきたのかを見つめ直すことは、これからの自然との向き合い方を考える上でも一つの重要な手がかりになるのではないかと感じています。

Statement

「巡礼」というテーマで始めるこの活動は、森のフィールドワークを通してアウトドアとは何かを再考するものです。

魅力ある自然を楽しむアウトドアは、自然と人間の調和によって成り立ちます。

このことは、環境問題にも関連する重要な要因となりつつあるため、この活動を通して自然環境の維持を目的とした問題意識の共有を考えます。

そして今回は秩父を舞台にPilgrimageを行い、この地域の重要なファクターとして山岳信仰に着目しました。

山岳信仰とは、山々やそれにまつわる自然現象を神聖な存在として崇拝する文化です。

古くから多くの文化において、山々は神々や霊的存在が宿る神聖な場所と考えられてきました。

一方で、現代社会においては、山岳地域における環境問題が深刻化しています。

商業活動を原因とした山林伐採や自然破壊が進んでおり、生態系や景観が破壊されることで自然の価値が脅かされています。

このような現状に対して、山岳信仰はポジティブな影響を与えます。

信仰に基づいた伝統的な儀式や行事によって、山々の神聖性や尊さが再認識されることで、自然環境の保全に向けた意識が高まります。

そして、その意識に基づき持続可能な観光や登山を行うことで、自然環境が保護されます。

総じて山岳信仰は、環境問題に対する理解を深め、自然との共生を促進することができる概念であるといえます。

Through this project, we approached the region of Chichibu by focusing on the idea of mountain worship. While conducting our research and developing the work, one aspect that particularly stood out was how this form of belief has historically played an important role in the preservation of the natural environment.

The practice of regarding mountains as sacred beings creates a certain distance and sense of reverence toward nature. That distance, in turn, seems to have fostered a relationship in which nature is treated with care rather than simply consumed. Although this differs from modern environmental discourse, it reveals how a long-standing cultural attitude toward nature has quietly contributed to its protection.

In Chichibu, such perspectives still exist within the daily lives and memories of the region. During our fieldwork we had the opportunity to speak with local residents, and through these conversations we were able to encounter ways of thinking about mountains and forests that are difficult to perceive from the outside. Experiencing these local sensibilities and values became one of the most meaningful aspects of this project.

One particularly memorable encounter was with Chichibu-based musician Shin Sasakubo. His deep knowledge of local traditions, ethnic customs, and regional history offered a number of valuable insights. His approach—carefully researching and engaging with the cultural layers of a place—became an important reference point for us as we considered how to think about the relationship between people and nature.

This installation attempts to evoke some of these ideas through photography, clothing, and spatial composition. Rather than presenting a conclusion, the exhibition serves more as an entry point—an invitation to reflect on how we might continue to engage with this landscape and its cultural background.

Our perception of forests and mountains inevitably changes with time. In that sense, revisiting the cultural beliefs and traditions that have shaped the way people relate to nature may offer an important clue for imagining how we might coexist with it in the future.
